Why a Root Canal May Be Recommended
Root canal treatment is recommended when the inner part of your tooth becomes infected or severely damaged.
This procedure stops the infection from spreading, helps relieve your symptoms, and prevents future problems. After all the infected material is removed from your tooth, your dentist will place a filling or crown on it to protect the tooth and ensure your bite stays properly aligned.
With proper care after treatment, patients often experience permanent relief. After a root canal, treated teeth can continue to function normally and may last a lifetime, making it an effective way to preserve oral health.
The Root Canal Procedure
To keep you comfortable during your procedure, your dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic. If you're feeling anxious, sedation may also be offered.
Once the area is numb, a small hole is made in the tooth to reach the infected pulp inside. The dentist carefully removes the damaged or infected pulp, then cleans the inside of the tooth to eliminate bacteria.
Next, the root canals are shaped and prepared so they can be properly sealed. The cleaned canals are filled with a safe material, and the hole in the tooth is sealed with a temporary filling.
In a follow-up visit, a permanent crown is placed over the tooth to protect it and restore normal function.
